Clients are taught to take control of their lives and to accept that some of the situations in their lives cannot be changed. In this way, clients are able to acquire new skills and strategies, that enable them to progress through the therapeutic process quickly and manage their lives more efficiently. In particular, cognitive restructuring, and behavioural and interpersonal therapies are key components of therapy.

A structured interview is used to take a detailed history from the client. This interview ascertains previous difficulties and interventions, medications, readiness of clients to make changes, expectations of the client in therapy and capacity to participate in the process of change.

On occasions, it may be necessary to discuss, with clients, a further consultation with their doctor with regard to depression and possible treatment by medication as an adjunct to ongoing therapy.

We draw on rating scales, where necessary, to assist clients in management of dysfunctional thinking, anger and/or pain and to assist in the evaluation of therapy outcomes.

Frequently it is required that a diagnoses be made for the purpose of writing reports for insurance organizations and court matters.

Rebates are available from Medicare and most health funds. The amount of the service covered by health funds varies according to the cover for which you pay.

Since 2006 clients with a Mental Health Care Plan (from a GP) are eligible to receive a rebate from Medicare. This government subsidy assists clients to access professional psychological services.
